DM to host meet on electronic archiving

DUBAI — Dubai Municipality will host the ‘Third Conference on Documentation and Electronic Archiving’ from the September 17 to 19, 2005 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The conference, which is being held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, and Chairman of Dubai municipality, in co-ordination with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Ictdar. It is designed to create a dynamic forum for exchanging experiences about knowledge management standards, policies and practices among diverse professionals coming from different sectors.

In the frame of preparations for the conference the higher organising committee met yesterday to review the plans and the preparations for the conference.

Meanwhile Khaled Ali bin Zayed, Director of Municipalities Centre at Dubai Municipality, said that the conference would witness a very distinguished participation in its third session where representatives from many countries will take part. He said the conference would open new eras for co-operation among countries particularly in using applications of running information and knowledge in supporting decision making processes. He added it will also be a good opportunity to follow the scientific development in fields of information and knowledge management to achieve the maximum benefits from the developments.

Hussein Al Fardan, who heads the executive committee said that the conference would enhance the co-operation among the participating nations in the conference and will help in learning new technology and theories from experts in the field.

The event will also features an exhibition where more than 300 organisations including service providers, solution providers, sellers, buyers, trade chambers from around the world will display their range of products, services and solutions for Documentation, Digital Archiving, Knowledge Management and Decision Support Systems.

A top official at the municipality noted that the area of knowledge management has great potential to become the key technology in knowledge creation and its management. The authority believes that it can assist in the ongoing process of economic, scientific, technological, and social development by providing and distributing effective and value-added information.

This major event will witness participation by government, corporate, and private professionals from all over the world including archivists, library and information science professionals, GIS professionals, IT professionals and service providers, content and knowledge managers, information providers and vendors, electronic publishing and virtual electronic communities and stakeholders in the digitisation and knowledge business.
