Dinner to Raise Funds for Jerusalem Students

ABU DHABI - Arab world’s renowned singer-music composer Ahmad Kaabour and popular poet Omar Al Fara will perform at the Al Quds University charity dinner in the capital to raise funds for needy students to pay their tuition fees.

Al Quds University is the only Arab university in the holy city of Jerusalem. Its President, Sari Nusseibeh and other officials are expected to attend the 6th charity dinner organised on May 15 by the university’s Friends’ Committee under the patronage of Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Sobhia El Masri, Al Quds University Friends’ Committee in Abu Dhabi, said that the Lebanese singer will sing the best of his songs which include several songs about Palestine including the most known song Ounadikom (“I Call on You”) that he composed at the age of 19.

Having started writing poetry at the age of 13, Al Fara, a Syrian poet, now has five divans, four of them are written in colloquial Arabic which is best to read in the Bedouin accent. One of his most famous poems is ”Hamda”, where he speaks about a rebellious Bedouin female who refuses to marry her cousin according to her tribal customs.

El Masri said that Al Quds University provides education and community services to students from neighbouring towns, villages and refugee camps.The university hosts more than 10,000 students many of them are unable to pay fees because of unemployment and the deteriorating economic conditions.
