Difficult to Test all Visitors for Diseases like
TB, Says Minister

ABU DHABI - Demands by some members of the Federal National Council to subject all residents and visitors to medical tests while entering the country to ensure that they are free from contagious diseases like TB are difficult to be met on the ground, Health Minister Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Quttami told Khaleej Times on Sunday.

“The ministry is committed to procedures set by the World Health Organisation.’

He said the ministry is conducting regular tests on applicants for new residencyto ensure that they are not infected with contagious diseases like TB whichprevails in26 out of 10,000 persons in thecountry, which is not high.

“Those who were found TB positive after tests were isolated and treated. For those failing to respond to treatment, the ministry coordinates with the Interior Ministry to deport them,” he added.

Dr Aysha Al Roumi, member of the FNC’s health committee, said FNC members expressed their concern that some residents who goon leave to their country return to the UAE carrying serious illnesses like TB which is more fatal thanAids.

They called on the ministry to take stricter measures to protect public safety, suggesting tests on those coming back to the UAE.
