DHA denies price hike of tobacco

Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has confirmed that the World Heart Federation (WHF) will present a proposal to globally increase customs tax on tobacco by 200 per cent in the context of efforts to combat smoking and provide additional resources to support the treatment of heart disease, according to a WAM report.

He stated that the media reports regarding a link between the proposal and doubling the price of cigarettes locally in August is incorrect. Murooshid pointed out that Professor Sidney Smith, President of the WHF, made the proposal during the opening session of the World Congress of Cardiology 2012, hosted by Dubai. He further added that applying tax depends on the decision of each country.
