Deterrent action will curb violations by food firms

A FOODSTUFF trading company has been ordered shut down for two months by a local court and its sales manager sentenced to six months in jail on charges of manipulating and doctoring the expiry dates of some foodstuff. We feel a violation of this nature should invite tougher penalties as public health has been endangered by such malpractice.

A two-month shutdown is hardly stringent punishment since the company has already profited by sales of such foodstuff far exceeding its budgetary expenditure. Similarly the six month jail term for the sales manager is also not deterrent enough as such violations put lives of people in grave danger through food poisoning. That some of this foodstuff was prepared for export is another issue of great concern as sending consignments of spoilt food will not only tarnish the company’s image but also put a question mark on other companies exporting from the UAE. Eventually the image of the UAE will take a big hit.
