The patient had been advised to have the operation done in Germany when the tumour was first diagnosed by doctors in his own country.

Dr Younes Qazem, Head of the Vascular Surgery Section at Rashid Hospital, said the patient had been transferred from the out-patient clinics after the tumour was diagnosed.

Tests revealed that the tumour was attached to a major blood vessel. CT Scans and 3D imaging of the blood vessel in the neck revealed the tumour, which was the size of a tennis ball, was engorged and enlarged and was placing pressure on the main artery feeding the brain, the face and the neck.

Dr Qazem said that the patient was told of the full extent of his condition and the surgical procedure that will be carried out for him.

The patient agreed to have the surgery at Rashid Hospital after refusing to travel to Germany for the operation.

The surgery, which took two hours was carried out under general anaesthesia.

Surgeons noticed the tumour was attached to the blood vessel and several surrounding nerves, which made the surgical removal of the tumour difficult, since the slightest mistake could result in a brain stroke and even paralysis in the nerves of the face or tongue.

Surgeons used an ultrasound cutter to separate the tumour from the blood vessel and the surgery was a success.
