The move comes after the department received several reports about small businesses like retail stores, groceries, laundry shops and restaurants operating especially in remote areas without licences or even after their licences have expired.

Ahmed Ali Al Burushi, Director of the Consumer Protection Unit at the DED, said they have started weekly inspections deploying more inspectors who visit different areas of the emirate to ensure that all traders comply with the country’s rules and regulations.

Al Burushi noted that most of these illegal shops have also been reported to be selling fake or expired products.

Concerned Residents

Concerned residents in some areas have reported such shops to the department.

Al Burushi said tough penalties, including hefty fines and permanent closure, would be imposed on illegal business establishments.

He also said that recent inspections have revealed that more than 70 per cent of the bakeries have implemented the Ministry of Economy’s order to reduce prices of bread and other wheat products.

The ministry had issued a new price list in January, reducing bread prices by 25 per cent at all bakeries, supermarkets and grocery shops following the drop in the prices of wheat in the international market.
