Professor Francisco Barale, Director-General of the ICGEB, has sent a message to Shaikh Nahyan bin Mabarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of UAEU, informing him that the DPDRU has become an affiliated centre.

The message conveyed congratulations to Shaikh Nahayan on the remarkable achievements of the unit which have earned it the distinguished status of ‘Affiliate Centre’ at the 14th session of the Council of Scientific Advisers and the Board of Governors held on October 25-26.

In his message, Professor Barale expressed his hope for greater cooperation between the ICGEB and the research unit in areas of common concern.

Among the benefits the unit would gain from the new status is the possibility of conducting advanced joint research that could hardly be carried out by individual centres or units.

The affiliated status is based on certain criteria, including the existence of highly qualified scientific cadres, advanced research tools and equipment, academic infrastructure such as universities, institutes and research centres.

The DPDRU had applied for affiliated status at the 13th session of ICGEB’s Board of Governors.

Earlier, a delegation representing the ICGEB’s Council of Advisers and General Secretariat had visited the unit and inspected its facilities. The Board of Governors considered the report of the inspection team and the file prepared by the unit at the centre’s 14th session and the 55 member countries voted for the unit.
