Dancing for a cause

DUBAI - The acute shortage of classrooms in the Philippines has led three Filipino computer clubs to join forces and organise 'Dance for a Cause', a fund-raising campaign in support of a classroom-building project initiated by the Philippine Department of Labour and Employment (DoLE).

The event, which takes place at 6pm on Friday at the Al Hamra Ballroom of the Metropolitan Palace Hotel, has the strong support of Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Libran Cabactulan who inspired camaraderie among the three clubs. These include Filipino Computer Club, Filipino Association for Computer Excellence (FACE) and Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) Group.

Commenting on the initiative, Cherry Pye Zablan-Torres, Filipino Computer Club president, said: "Ambassador Cabactulan had broached about the idea of a dance for a cause. We had earlier planned to hold a fund-raising event for the abandoned children, but as the hospital bills of Baby Amigos had been waived, we had to come up with a noble project. Proceeds of the event would be used to donate one classroom in the 'Classroom, Galing sa Mamamayang Pilipino Abroad (C-GMA)' programme."

C-GMA is a collaboration of DoLE with the Departments of Education (DepEd) and Foreign Affairs, and the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry. DepEd records indicated a backlog of 44,716 classrooms as of early 2003. Each classroom will have an area of 63 square metres. Besides migrants, foreign employers of temporary contract workers, or even civic groups and individuals in the Philippines may donate to the project.

Meanwhile, during the 'Dance for a Cause' event, Ambassador Cabactulan will share a special message to the clubs and attendees. Consul General Generoso Calonge is also expected to grace the event and deliver an opening address. In addition to Zablan-Torres, Ed Ferrer and Dante Delizo, the president of FACE and CADD Group, respectively, will also be speaking on the occasion. The programme will showcase the talents of the three different clubs as well as the staff from the Philippine Consulate, Philippine Overseas Labour Office and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration office in Dubai.
