Curtains down on Deira Taxi Station

DUBAI — The beginning of a new era in Dubai's public transport system, the ambitious Dubai Metro project, work on which has already begun, will mean curtains for the Deira Taxi Station.

The station was to be closed to regular public transport buses and mini-buses yesterday, but the public holiday may have added a few hours to the station's life.

The cafeterias at the station have been removed and other installations are also coming off as authorities prepare for the demolition of the main structure.

Meanwhile, work is underway, on a part of the metro project, at what used to be the Union Square Park, which shares its boundary with the taxi station. An underground station is being built in place of the Union Square, while the taxi station, it is believed, will be replaced by a power sub-station for the metro station.
