Cultural heroes honoured at first Emirates festival

DUBAI - General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, inaugurated on Monday the first Emirates Cultural Festival, organised by the Dubai Cultural and Scientific Association, at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The opening ceremony, attended by a large number of invitees from all over the world, featured the honouring of the two cultural heroes who were recognised as the cultural personalities of the year - the former Lebanese minister of culture, Dr Ghassan Salameh, and Shaikh Mohammed bin Saeed bin Ghubash of the UAE - the two of the distinguished personalities who had significantly contributed to the cultural movement in the Arab world.

After the opening ceremony, General Shaikh Mohammed inaugurated 11 art exhibitions including the `Digital Lense' by UAE artists Jassim Al Awadi, Saleh Al Ustaz, a stamps exhibition and an exhibition of the possessions of the Dubai Cultural and Scientific Association.

In his inaugural speech, Ibrahim Bu Melha, President of Justice Department, Dubai Attorney-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai Cultural and Scientific Association, said: "The history of mankind witnessed fights between various nations. However, literature and art created common basis for the interaction of thoughts and ideas of people descending from different cultures," he said.

The festival will be a big cultural event during which prominent cultural figures from Arab countries and other parts the world would introduce various cultural, theatrical, art, musical and folkloric works, Mr Bu Melha added.

"During the past 33 years, our country has witnessed great achievements on the cultural level. The festival will reflect this story of success, and will be another beautiful image of our country across the world," he said, adding the festival coincides with the foramtion of Dubai Cultural Council, and praised the vision of the President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the efforts of General Shaikh Mohammed who initiated this cultural event.

The festival will feature a series of seminars dealing with significant topics such as the Arab-Asian cultural interaction. Other activities will also take place on the sidelines of the event including an all-ladies evening, poetry sessions featuring the folkloric Nabati poems of the UAE, several theatrical dramas and music shows.

A seminar discussing the Arab novel will also be held, as well as a seminar dedicated to writing for children, Arab women in the Arab movies, among others.

The cultural personalities of the year

THE CULTURAL PERSONALITY OF THE UAE, SHAIKH MOHAMMED BIN SAEED BIN GHUBASH: One of the pioneering personalities who left their mark on the cultural scene in the UAE. He was born in Ras Al Khaimah in 1899 and received his education in Al Azhar University. He has written books on the UAE history, on the Shehhi Tribe and commented on several manuscripts written by historians. He wrote his biography in a letter addressed to the Director of Education Department in Qatar explaining the posts he occupied in justice field, education among others.

THE ARAB CULTURAL PERSONALITY DR GHASSAN SALAMEH was born in Lebanon in 1951. He had significant contributions in forming the cultural awareness of the society. He had occupied several posts in Lebanon and abroad and wrote many books.
