The workplace today is more demanding than ever, as students are now expected to possess professional experience prior to applying for a job. Taking this into consideration, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani) is a pioneer in giving students an opportunity to gain professional experience before graduation as a part of its curriculum.
"When BITS Pilani was established in India in 1964, its policy was dedicated to educate and train students for the economic development of themselves, their family and the society. We take special care to prepare students according to the needs of the professional world or working society, which is why 'BITSians' are now successful entrepreneurs, administrators or government officers," said Prof. R.N. Saha, Director of BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, who has spent the last 33 years with the university (28 years in India; five in the UAE).
Explaining the pre-graduation system, Prof. Saha said that BITS Pilani started off with a collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during its formative years to help create a well-rounded curriculum.
"In 1974, BITS Pilani introduced a seven-and-half month industry internship in two phases across two months and 5½ months, where students undertake projects in various companies," he said, adding that the programme has been implemented by Dubai campus, since its inception in 2000.
Open to third and fourth year students, the university recently held an exclusive career fair on campus where over 50 UAE-based companies, which included MNCs and local conglomerates, were on site to recruit potential candidates.
"The repeated visits of several organisations to BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus to recruit students is an indication of the superior quality of our students", he said.
According to Amsal Muneeb, Executive, Placement Division at BITS Pilani, students are provided hands-on employability skills workshops and training to enhance their technical know-how further which makes them industry ready. He also mentioned, "We holistically look at the needs and demands of the various industries and accordingly prepare the students to become an invaluable asset to the organisation". Muneeb added that the career fair is a unique platform where the university plays a role to bridge the gap between students' and companies' expectations.
Over 150 job opportunities are generated by BITS Pilani each year for its engineering students through the career fair and extensive placement drives.
Haritha Harikrishnan, who is enrolled in BITS Pilani's computer engineering programme, and Achuyth Somadas, a mechanical engineering student, among many others were excited to explore the job opportunities with a wide variety of employers from diverse industries under one roof.
Speaking about her experience at BITS Pilani, Sharon Aldrin, a graduate engineer trainee said that she had secured a position at Schindler, thanks to the engaging efforts of the university, and looks forward to newer ventures.
