This was announced on Tuesday following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) concluded by the two parties. “The move is aimed to hone the skills of future Emirati generations and for the good of the country,” said Director-General of the Dubai Courts Dr Ahmed bin Hazeem.

“The initiative is part of permanent cooperation among government departments to achieve and sustain social partnership, in terms of all aspects, particularly those related to the family.”

Khaleej Times had earlier quoted Abdul Aziz Al Hammadi, senior family counsellor at Dubai Courts, as saying that a rise in the number of divorce cases has been reported in Dubai over the last three years.

“While 618 break-ups were recorded in 2006, the divorce cases went down to 594 in 2007, yet shot up again to 656 in 2008,” Hammadi said.

An increase in the number of cases of family disputes and violence was also noticed in the emirate over the same period. “The family litigations registered in 2006 hit 2,085. The number went up to 2,456 in 2007 and 2,615 in 2008.”

Minister of State Dr Maitha Al Shamsi, who also chairs the Marriage Fund, said the proposed committee, as per the four-item agreement, will be responsible for laying down a proper action plan as well as the expected schedule.

“Mixing humanitarian aspects with law, the committee will properly handle the problems hampering and destabilising family bonds,” the minister said.

“Should a proper legal framework be adopted, such family problems can be easily solved.”

Marriage Fund, as per the recent official statistics, has distributed Dh71.97 million to 1,496 Emirati people this year. As many as 59,576 Emiratis have collected Dh3.98 billion in grants from the Fund since its launch in 1993.
