Being held under the patronage of Lt-Gen Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, the conference seeks to devise a new mechanism and come up with an international agreement to stop hackers in the UAE and around the world in their tracks, Maj-Gen Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Police’s Central Operations, told reporters here on Tuesday. The event will be organised by the Institute for Judicial Training and Studies and Abu Dhabi Police in association with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and Microsoft Corporation.

To a question by this reporter, Maj-Gen Al Raisi said, “Cyber crimes are under control in the UAE though we have no statistics about them.”

Attempts of many hackers were foiled and they were brought to justice in the past due to the joint efforts of the Ministry of Interior and Etisalat.

The Ministry of Interior is cooperating with many international police organisations like the German Police for training national officers in handling cyber crimes, arresting hackers and compiling reports. Director-General of the Institute for Judicial Training and Studies Dr Mohammed Mahmoud Al Kamali said, “Countries which have no judicial cooperation agreements with the UAE for extradition of cyber criminals, mainly in Africa, have shown readiness to cooperate with the judicial and police agencies in the emirates to apprehend hackers. He said the conference would assemble a host of world experts to discuss cyber crimes and come up with an international agreement to fight such crimes.

“The UAE is currently participating in efforts to draft an Arab law for fighting such crimes,’’ he said. Involvement of Abu Dhabi Police in the conference would add a security dimension to the legal and judicial domains while Etisalat would deal with the technological aspects.
