Crowds swelled at Dubai’s St Mary’s Catholic Church and the adjacent Holy Trinity church for special prayers and services.

Sharjah’s St Martin’s Church and the Sharjah Worship Centre also saw prayers being held on the occasion, the culmination of the Christian season of Lent. Many refrain from eating meat and go on fast during the 40 days leading up to Easter Sunday, which is being observed this year on April 24.

Services for different communities in their languages were conducted from 6am till late in the evening at St Mary’s Church.

The Anglican Protestants held two services, in the morning and later in the afternoon. Other denominations like the Orthodox, CSI and Marthoma parishes also observed the day with piety.

For many, it was a time for meditation and introspection. Reverend Felix Mathew, during his sermon in Sharjah said: “The community should reach out to those in need in the spirit of sacrifice and forgiveness.”

According to Raju Maliekal of the St Mary’s Church, 15,000 worshippers attended service in the morning. “It was packed just like every year,” he said. The three services in the evening were also crowded and the crowds spilled to the main compound, he said.

Father Tomacito, the Parish priest, gave the sermon.

Wilson Davis from Ajman said: “I came at 5.30am, the crowd was unbelievable ... bachelors, families, it was an outpouring of faith.’’
