Chinese state TV comes to UAE

DUBAI — China Central Television (CCTV), a major state television broadcaster in China, announced the opening of its regional office in Dubai as it signalled the start of a new era in the relations between the two countries. The new regional office in the TECOM media cluster will serve as a base for the state broadcaster to produce content in Arabic for its network of channels that are viewed by an audience of over 700 million.

Commenting on the launch of a dedicated facility in Dubai Media City, Sun Yusheng, vice-president, CCTV, said, “It is with the support of the Chinese and UAE government that we have been able to set up our regional office in partnership with TECOM media cluster. The establishment of a regional centre is aimed at accelerating political, economic, cultural and media communications between China and the Middle East region.”

Abdullatif Al Mulla, group chief executive officer, TECOM Investments, said, “The presence of China’s national television station and one of its most important broadcast companies highlights Dubai’s role on the global landscape and underlines the enabling facilities and services offered through the media free zone to potential international partners.”

The new facility will host a broadcast studio while serving as a regional centre for CCTV correspondents based in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.

Speaking on the sidelines of the official launch, Mohammed Abdullah, managing director, TECOM media cluster, said, “The extensive global reach of CCTV will definitely create an opportunity for better communication needed to create knowledge, understanding and awareness. This new office will serve the purpose of creating a cultural exchange that will lead to better interaction in the future.”

The CCTV network boasts 39 channels reaching over 140 countries around the world. With the launch of its regional office in Dubai, CCTV will have the distinction of broadcasting in all six official languages stipulated by the United Nations.

Shaikh Hasher bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, Director-General, Dubai Department of Information, officially signalled the launch of the regional centre at a ceremony hosted at Burj Al Arab.

The Middle East centre is the last of the seven regional cetres launched by CCTV, taking its total number of overseas stations to 50.
