A continuous collaboration between schools, parents and psychologists can help integrate children with learning disabilities into the mainstream schools, they said at the conference organised by Ishara Consultants, Dubai.

“Learning disability, mainly dyslexia, is seen as a problem by many institutions.

“However, there could be other factors that can induce slow learning in children,” said Dr John Everatt of Surrey University, UK.

“Dyslexia is a situation where a child lacks the ability to recognise the sounds within words,” said John. Addressing the conference, the UAE’s Minister of Education, Dr Hanif Hassan, said, “The Ministry of Education strives to ensure a friendly environment inside the school premises and classrooms, which is conducive to educating students with special needs. More importantly, we understand the importance of training teachers and enhancing awareness.”

Schools in the UAE are being encouraged to incorporate children with learning disabilities in mainstream schools.
