Addressing the annual meeting of the UAE University Faculty at the Lecture theatre of Zayed Central Library yesterday, he said that the university's budget is a serious issue that is even affecting its application for international accreditation.

"It is now clear that moving the university to the next phase of development requires new levels of funding as well as new ways for determining and allocating our budget," said Shaikh Nahyan.

He highlighted that the university and him are totally committed to do all they can to resolve this situation.

"We will continue to make our case and explore additional sources of financing, we are optimistic that a solution will be found," he added.

Shaikh Nahyan discussed the pressing challenge that faces the university, saying that it includes admission policies and number of students admitted to the UAEU, continued review and improvement of university policies, periodic review of academic programs as well as employment of graduates and the university reputation in the community.

The UAEU has carried out a honorific achievement last year, he said, adding that the accomplishments include the international accreditation of the College of Education, the graduation of the first class of the College of Information Systems, the pioneering work in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the various initiatives in all other colleges to enhance excellence and quality as well as the plans for the new university campus.

"The university has made a specific move regarding specialised conferences and the high quality of the UAEU faculty and staff and their output in research and service," he said.

The chancellor of the UAEU also appealed to the faculty staff members to augment the collaboration between each other in various educational and scientific areas.

The UAEU has accepted 3,676 new students for the new academic year 2005-2006.

Dr Hadif bin Johan Al Dahiri, Vice Chancellor of the UAEU, has attended the annual meeting together with deans of the different colleges besides old and new members of the university educational and managerial staffs.
