Cartoon characters will spread traffic awareness

DUBAI — In an effort to catch the attention of the young generation road users, the Police Department has chalked out a traffic awareness campaign where cartoon characters would be used, with “Raqeeb” playing the lead role.

Campaign Manager Amer Ibrahim said the unique campaign will see students and their parents participating in the promotion of safe driving techniques, which will continue till December 21. The campaign will also include exhibitions in the major malls like City Centre, Mercato and BurJuman.

Earlier, inaugurating an exhibition as part of the “Your Driving Reflects Your Manner” organised by the Traffic Department and ANT group, Lieutenant-Colonel Abdullah Al Kaithi, Deputy Director of Traffic Department, told Khaleej Times that the second week of the campaign was aimed at spreading awareness among public, minimising traffic accidents and awarding ideal drivers. He said the campaign targeted all drivers including public transport drivers, new drivers, university and school students.

The exhibition includes awareness cards, brochures and stickers showing different kinds of accidents, and display of the car which would be awarded to the ideal driver.

Abdullah said the campaign underscores the importance of having respect for all road users including pedestrians, sticking to traffic lanes, not to overtake dangerously, not to drive in a reckless and rash manner and to follow traffic rules.

Amer Ibrahim explained that special police teams will cover the Dubai roads everyday to identify the ideal driver, who will be given a coupon along with the campaign brochure. The coupon will go into a draw to he held at the end of the campaign to pick up the lucky winner among the ideal drivers for the “Road Master of 2005” award which also includes a KIA Sorento car.
