Drivers should be aware that their vehicles will be impounded if they fail to register them after the two-month grace period and also if their accumulated traffic violations exceeded Dh5,000. Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Acting Director of the General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police said according to the UAE Federal Law, the traffic department has the right to impound the car if the accumulated traffic violations exceeded Dh5,000 and the owner failed to pay even after being notified. The owner will be given a two-month grace period. He explained that the fines will increase if the person did not pay because he will be penalised Dh10 per month for the delay.

A UAE national complained to Al Rabia Ajman radio that his car was impounded by the police and that nobody had notified him when they seized the car parked in front of the Dubai Court.

However, Colonel Saif said the police impounded the car for an accumulated fine of Dh6,200 and the car registration had ended on March 20. His insurance had also expired. Colonel Saif said the car owner had been notified several times but he did not pay the fines, nor did her renew his insurance or registration. He added that the car owner had earlier committed three violations of fines of Dh29,000 in October 2010. He was notified by the police but he did not pay the fine and so the police issued a circular and impounded the car in November 2010 after which he paid the fines in March 2011. Saif explained the man has now committed violations of Dh14,000 and he appealed to the Dubai Traffic Prosecution which considered his condition and reduced it the fines to Dh6,200. -amira@khaleejtimes.com
