Residents have complained that such pools of water do not dry up and pose major health hazards for them.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Mustafa Al Mardi said the muck generated from such waste water also spreads foul smell in the area, besides giving the place an unhygienic look. "It has taken it's toll on our children's health too who suffer from various infections," he said.

"Many children splash around in the pools of water or ride through on their bicycles," he said.

Murtada Abdul Azeem, a resident of Al Nuaimia, said every one of his family spends half-an-hour scrubbing the muck from their shoes before they enter the apartment.

Ali Othman said these wash puddles also created pot-holes on the roads, and were a risk for both motorists and old people walking on the streets. He said these breeding grounds for insects had resulted in increase in infectious diseases like diarrhoea and viral hepatitis associated.

Rugaya Suliman, another resident, said landlords were not concerned with public health and preservation of environment in the area, and they rent out shops on the ground floor for car washing business.

"A large number of people are affected by this mess of automobile fluid and soap water which also contain chemicals," she said.

Mohammed Yousif, Head of the Waste Section of Ajman Municipality, said the municipality endeavour is to maintain a positive and favourable outlook of the emirate, and was working towards building awareness among residents on ways to keep the emirate clean and tidy.

Yousif said the municipality was keeping the communication lines open with community members who are welcome to lodge their complaints or offer suggestions to assist the municipality in improving it's services.
