"Efforts are being made to crack down on the captors and release him," the official told Khaleej Times.

Naji Rashid Al-Nuaimi, 28, was kidnapped by gunmen on Tuesday night while leaving the home of the U.A.E.'s cultural affairs attache in Baghdad's Mansour district.

The gunmen, riding in three cars, shot Nuaimi's armed Sudanese driver, Badawi Ahmad Ibrahim, who later died in a Baghdad hospital.

The official said the UAE government is making contacts with the Arab League and the Coalition forces in Baghdad to help track down the kidnappers and release the envoy.

"As far as I know, efforts were being intensified to crack down on the captors and ensure the release of the diplomat," he affirmed.

He said that the captors are likely have certain demands and they might announce these any time.

"I am sure that he will be released safe and sound," the official assured.

Security officials, who believe the motive for the abduction was political, not criminal, said they have some leads, including a descriptions of the captors and the cars they were driving.
