Briefing newsmen, Daniel J. Tonner, Chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run in Abu Dhabi, said that since 1995, over a million dirhams has been raised in the eight Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Runs, 'with every fil earmarked for research in the UAE'.

He quoted the newsletter of the Terry Fox Foundation (TFF), 'On the Run Around the World', as having congratulated the Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run for its admirable international status, which placed it in the top 10 of more than 619 run sites in terms of the number of participants in last year's event. He said it was commendable that the UAE was placed in the top 10 of 48 countries, both for participation and funds raised.

He added that in May 2003, the Abu Dhabi TFC presented the final installment of its Dh800,000 funding commitment to the UAE University (UAEU) in Al Ain, which oversees research in the country. He said the Abu Dhabi TFR's would continue to fund new cancer research initiatives, co-ordinated by Dr George Carruthers, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the UAEU's cancer research facilities, at Al Tawam Hospital in Al Ain.

Participants for the TFR this year, which will be from the Sheraton Car Park up to the Abu Dhabi Hilton Hotel and back, are allowed to run, jog, walk, roller-blade, push prams, walk etc. Colourful T-shirts bearing the logo of this year's run will be on sale at the venue for Dh25 each, and hotels and cafes in Abu Dhabi will be adding their support by donating sandwiches, water and soft drinks.

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence and Municipality will also provide their support by cordoning off the traffic along the Corniche stretch for the period of the run. The Canadian Embassy in Abu Dhabi will be the main organiser of the event.

As usual, the Banking Challenge and School Challenge, to create a spirit of friendly competition among banks and schools in the capital will also be part of the TFR, to find out which institutions manage to generate the maximum funds, or field the maximum number of participants.
