'Mizan Naturopathy Centre', which is the first of its kind in the UAE and major development for Abu Dhabi, is offering new concept in therapeutical treatment called floatation therapy. It is considered as one of the most attractive and effective ways of learning to refresh oneself and a scientifically proved form of relaxation known as 'Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy or R.E.S.T'.

Speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday, Lule Doobeh, Manager of the Centre said floatation therapy offers people the chance of regaining physical, emotional or psychological health whereby a person is floating on a bed of water saturated with Epsom salts and kept at a constant temperature of 35.5 degrees Celsius.

Recent research has shown that up to 80 to 90 per cent of people visiting their general practitioners do so because of a psychosomatic or stress-related disorder, she said.

Floatation therapy has been shown to reduce the harmful stress-related chemicals in blood and at the same time reduce blood pressure and heart rate which may well be raised due to a demanding life-style, she explained.

It also reduces insomnia, jet lag, pre-menstrual syndrome and post-natal depression, she added.

"The floatation tank experience ultimately isolates an individual from external stimuli, enabling them to forget their body and concentrate their mind. The tank creates a state of sensory relaxation as the mind and body are shielded from all external stimulation. The brain's normal workload is reduced by up to 90 per cent and the body conserves energy and has a chance to heal and rejuvenate itself," said Mrs Doobeh. Due to the high salt level in the water, the floatation tank creates zero gravity environment. This allows the person to relax every single muscle, neck, arms, back and even ears. When the person starts to float, he/she becomes free from all the gravity computations and the physical world, which leaves the brain free to attend to other matters.

Another health benefit of floatation is that it creates a balance between the two sides of the brain and allows a person to use huge amounts of previously unavailable brain power, said Mrs Doobeh.

"Exercising and eating a healthy diet is only one part of becoming a healthy individual. Every one of us requires relaxation time. This is even more essential in the highly pressurised society of today with the hectic lives we tend to lead," said Mrs Doobeh.

As for the massage and yoga, she said that visitors of the Centre could combine all the three recreations for the ultimate in drifting away.
