Representatives from German business and the country's tourism industry met the emirate's tourism authority to discuss possible partnerships and joint investments.

The visit follows that of German tour operators and travel agents in February to sharpen their knowledge of Abu Dhabi to help sell it as a tourist destination.

The ADTA is seeking to promote Abu Dhabi around Europe as a holiday location. Germany, along with Britain, is seen by ADTA as a key country from which to entice tourists.

Ali Ahmed Al Hosani, ADTA head of marketing, said: "Germany is one of the most important markets in which we are aggressively promoting Abu Dhabi. It suffices to say that the number of German tourists visiting the emirate round the year is among the highest. This number is increasing steadily, thanks to the efforts of our office in Frankfurt [which opened in March this year]."

Abu Dhabi airline Etihad has been flying directly to Munich since June 2004 and Frankfurt since June last year. It increased the number of flights to Munich from three to five a week at the end of March.

Citing the ADTA's upcoming participation at the IMEX travel exhibition in Frankfurt at the end of this month, Al Hosani said that the tourism body is keen to have a strong presence at various travel and tourism events in Germany.

"It is precisely for this reason that we participated in the UAE-German economic partnership forum which was held in Munich on May 9," he said.
