DUBAI — Textiles that have been worn traditionally by native Inuits in the frozen tundra region of Northern Canada could soon be available to residents of the UAE, never mind the high temperatures for most part of the year.

A delegation from the Canadian company Inuk Art Souk, headed by Inuit MP Peter Ittinuar, is in Dubai scouting for potential buyers for its products.

On offer is seal fur and Qiviaq pelts from goats, which Steven Cooper, a director of the company said, was an equivalent to cashmere and costs Dh1,050 when sold in scarves.

“Although it might seem ironic to sell Inuit products in a desert climate,” he said. “We are literally polar opposites. However, as they say, opposites attract. We’ve had a lot of interest from clients we are meeting, since we arrived here,” he added, but declined to give the names of companies interested in buying the products. The company is also looking to sell Canadian diamonds mined in the northeast of the country.

“The diamonds we offer are the cleanest in the world,” he said. “None of these diamonds were sold in exchange for arms. We have the most ethical diamond practices in the world.”

Ittinuar, who is the first Inuit to be elected to the Canadian parliament, started the company several years ago with the backing of lawyer Cooper.

The company has traditionally only sold within Canada but has been encouraged to broaden out by contacts in Dubai. The delegation will leave on December 6, after a whistlestop tour of a handful of industry sectors.

“We are not here to sell anything,” said Cooper. “This is just a fact-finding mission. But by the next time we visit, who knows.
