The huge response to the drive is a direct response of the country to the growing domestic waste problem, which now stands as one of the highest in the world.
More than winning the Can Collection contest, participants are united in the campaign to spread the message of environmental protection across the country and physically reduce solid waste delivered to landfills.
“We are very pleased with the response of the community to the drive, which is getting more and more support every year,” Habiba Al Marashi, EEG Chairperson, said.
Started in the 1990s, the Can Collection Campaign is the first recycling programme launched by the Group, and is also among the first successful community waste segregation activities ever to be initiated in the UAE.
This year the drive was extended to all the seven emirates.
The campaign was held at the Family Park, New Corniche in Abu Dhabi, Gate 4 Dubai Creek Park in Dubai, the Radisson SAS in Sharjah, Al Ain Speaking School, Umm Al Quwain Municipality compound, Fujairah Municipality compound, Ras Al Khaimah Indian High School, and in front of Lulu Centre in Ajman.
The atmosphere at the drive sites was charged with commitment and sincerity. In Dubai, bus loads of students and teachers, as well as members of the public trooped to the drop off site. Similarly, at all the other sites students, families, company staff and volunteers congregated amid a general feeling of environmental concern and good will.
People from all backgrounds, ages and nationalities came together on the day of the drive to support EEG’s mission to protect the environment — a glimpse of the multi-cultural character of the UAE community.
On its part, the Group made the necessary arrangements to make the event an enjoyable and a meaningful one.
Ample bottles of cold water and chilled juices provided refreshments to participants and volunteers, as they helped in unloading, weighing and transporting bag after bag of cans. Marquees were set up to provide shade.
The last collection of cans was brought to the drive site by the participants to add to the final tally of their collection.
The Drive also served as the as a final opportunity for members of the community to join the campaign and help in spreading the message of environmental protection.
The main sponsor of Can Collection Drive 2006 is Al Safi Danone Friends of Environment Club. The drive is ably supported by Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, Dubai Municipality, Umm Al Quwain Municipality, Fujairah Municipality, Ajman Municipality and Environmental Protection and Industrial Development Agency RAK. Collection skips and hauling trucks in all the emirates were provided by ETA. Refreshments were provided by Al Safi Danone and Masafi Mineral Water in all the sites.
The winners, participants and supporting organisations of the Campaign and Drive will be felicitated in a grand function on June 5 that will commemorate the World Environment Day.
The top winners of the campaign will win prizes such as airline tickets and electronic equipment.
