Police officials have said the move was necessary to stem the phenomenon. The officials affirmed police have begun the imposition of heavy fines on motorists jumping the red signal since the beginning of September.

"There were 377 such violations last month," said Major Eisa Al Jaziri, Head of the Traffic Section at Rifa police station. He said the offence was a serious one, ending in most cases in death or serious injury.

An erring motorist, according to traffic rules, is fined Dh500 and five black points are added to his or her file in accordance with the black point system introduced in the early 1990s.

Maj Jaziri said an awareness campaign was launched in August. The police official said that the Dubai Traffic Police Department, in cooperation with various agencies, installed surveillance cameras at intersections in the city to detect red signal jumping by reckless drivers.
