The model schools were established many years ago to offer model educational methods that include, besides the high quality academic process, extracurricular activities.

Al Ain has seven model schools for boys and girls, which are Al Ain Model School 1 and 2, Hilli Applied School, Felj Hazza Primary School, Al Maali Model School, Emirates Model School, and Al Nahyanyh Model School. All of these schools enjoy state-of-the-art playgrounds, labs, libraries and auditoriums.

Al Ain Educational Zone had reduced allowances given to teachers, who supervise the different extracurricular activities, and reduction of the school hours. The allowances were reduced from Dh3,500 to Dh2,500 for principals, from Dh3,000 to Dh2,000 for headmasters, and from Dh2,500 to Dh1,500 for teachers.

Talking to Khaleej Times, a principal of a model school, said: "It is taken for granted that these decisions will affect the quality of education offered by these schools." He added: "The new system will deprive these schools of their distinguished status they have been enjoying over the other schools since their inception. These educational organisations have won the acclamation of both the public and educationists for the excellent performance of their graduates in the different fields."

The principal said: "It is widely thought that the new decisions were taken to help these schools meet the financial difficulties they might face as a result of the policy adopted by the educational zones in Abu Dhabi to cut the school fees."
