DUBAI - The Dubai Court of Appeals has upheld a lower court ruling which convicted a prominent UAE businessman of offering a Dh2 million bribe to a senior government official in Dubai in order to obtain permission to build a 40-storey building along Shaikh Zayed Road in an area restricted to three-storey buildings, a news report in the Al Ittihad Arabic daily newspaper said.

The report said the man had been sentenced by the lower court to one-year suspended prison term. The court had also ordered confiscation of the amount sent to the official.

The case goes back to October 15 last year when the public prosecution said the accused had sent a cheque for Dh2 million to a senior government official for being allowed to build a high-rise in an area along Shaikh Zayed Road where the height of a building is restricted to three storeys. Although the man told police he had sent the cheque to the government official as bribe, he later denied having said this during when interviewed by the prosecution.
