The volume, meant to tease readers to follow up the sample stories with the full novel, will be available as early as next week in both Arabic and English languages.

In fact, complimentary copies will be distributed freely with UAE national newspapers this Saturday.

“The book includes striking excerpts from the six shortlisted novels, with biographies of the writers, the judges and the translators who worked on the texts,” said Salwa Mikdadi, head of the Arts and Culture Programme at the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy, which provides funding for the Prize to its Board of Trustees.

The six featured finalists and their novels are: Mohamed Mansi Qandil with “A Cloudy Day on the West Side”, Mansour Ez Eldin with “Beyond Paradise”, Rabee Jaber with “America”, Abdo Khal with “Spewing Sparks as Big as Castles”, Rabai Al-Madhoun with “The Lady from Tel Aviv” and Jamal Naji with “When the Wolves Grow Old”.

“We hope the Prize will stimulate interest and increase readership of the Arab novel regionally and internationally,” added Mikdadi.

The overall winner of this year’s prize will be announced on March 2 in Abu Dhabi, during a ceremony attended by prominent literary figures and publishers from throughout the Arab World and internationally.

This prestigious literary prize, now in its third year, aims to recognise and reward excellence in contemporary Arabic creative writing, but also to encourage wider readership of Arabic literature locally and internationally.

It is independently administered by its own Board of Trustees, with the support of the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy and the UK’s Booker Prize Foundation.

The shortlisted writers will be present this year at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, where they will meet with the general public. On March 3 and 4, the fair organisers will set up a public meetings and discussions with the winner of the 2010 IPAF.

The other five shortlisted writers will also be available for discussions at the Book Fair on March 3 at the “Book Club” and on March 4 at the KITAB Sofa.
