Speaking to Khaleej Times, Khodor Dimmasi, head of Media Relations Department of the UAE University (UAEU) announced that the Cox Group won the bid for designing the new campus of UAEU.

This follows in the wake of the signing of a 30-years allowance agreement between the UAE University and Mubadala. Work on the first phase of the new university campus next year.

"The new campus of 280,000 square metres area will have art learning facilities for students, prop up and housing. The entire project located at Al Maqam in Al Ain is scheduled to be completed by 2010," said Dimassi.

The project would be completed in four phases with work on the first and second stages beginning in 2006 and ending in mid-2008. The third and fourth phases would be completed by mid-2010.

Dimassi said that the aim of the project was to have one big campus in one place. Care would be taken to observe local traditions and have separate campuses for the male and female students.

At the moment, the UAEU has several campuses with the female campus in Al Maqam and the one for male students in Al Jimmi in addition to the Islamic Institute for male and Al Mowaijy Campus for male students.

"A number of the existing campuses are not appropriate for contemporary learning requirements and for this reason there's the need of a new, more modern campus," said Dimassi, adding that the new campus would take the UAEU into the 21st Century.
