The Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Department said the victim, aged 21, was riding on the hard-shoulder of the highway towards Yas Island when he was hit by a car. The accident, according to the department and an eye-witness account, happened at around 11pm on the Shaikh Khalifa Bridge.

“He was riding on the right-hand hard-shoulder that was partially closed with barriers and sign-boards when the speeding vehicle, leaving its lane, hit the bike. The biker was severely injured and died instantly,” said First Lt Abdullah Al Qubaisi, a section director at the department.

An eye-witness said the accident happened almost at the centre of the bridge.

He said: “It was around 10.50pm when my colleague and I passed the accident site. I could see a man covered and lying on the road. There were lots of security and safety patrols and personnel at the site. We saw a car with stains of blood on its rear door and the driver was sitting at the wheel with both his hands on his head in a state of shock.”

Al Qubaisi blamed both the car driver and the biker for the fatal accident and said if little attention was given to the road the young Emirati would not have lost his life.

He further urged bikers and other road users to strictly adhere to the traffic safety regulations and guidance to help prevent such fatal accidents.
