The Moroccan side wanted the Spanish prime minister to cancel his visit to the Spanish-administered islands of Ceuta and Melila, scheduled to begin today, but nothing has been said about any change in the visit’s schedule. Moroccans felt that the visit of Aznar to the two disputed islands would be a part of an election campaign he is conducting in favour of his party which he announced without caring for the feelings of Moroccans, even though the quake-hit a city is located only 150km from Ceuta and Melila. They thought that the Spanish politician would cancel the visit or at least postpone it in order to clear the air between the two countries, whose relations were affected due to a series of incidents, the first being two Spanish warplanes that violated Moroccan air space. The incident, however, was explained as error due to climatic conditions. Later, Aznar decorated Spanish personnel with medals for the role they played in the island of Lila, but it seems that the internal elections will force the politicians to use papers or take steps even with narrow-mindedness by some in the interest of the party. Judgment, after the end of the Spanish elections, could strongly and seriously be made on the measures adopted in the past and whether these were used as just eyewash for running the elections or a new Spanish strategy towards Rabat.
