“Our inaugural flight will be for the Singapore-Sydney sector on October 25, with a return flight on October 26. All 471 seats of the A380 will be auctioned internationally via eBay, allowing prospective passengers to bid for a chance to be one of the first to fly on board the superjumbo aeroplane,” said Meow-Seng Lim, the airline’s general manager (Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and UAE), during a Press briefing at Shangri-La Hotel yesterday.

Starting prices for the auction had been $3.80 for Economy Class, $38 for Business Class and $380 for the Singapore Airlines Suites.

Proceeds of the auction will be donated to Medecins Sans Frontiers, Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick and Childrenís Hospital at Westmead in Australia, as well as Singapore’s Community Chest.

Jose Thachil, Singapore Airlines’s marketing manager-Gulf, said that the first delivery of A380 will be used to operate the Singapore-Sydney route, which is a high density market for the airline.

“Eventually, when the rest of the first orders have been delivered, we will launch A380 flights from Singapore to London,” he said.

Although the airline does not have immediate plans to fly the A380 to Dubai, Thachil said that they are not discounting the possibility of using the aircraft to fly to this region depending on market demand.
