The workers continued their strike yesterday demanding a wage increase.
Rashid Bakheet Al Jumairi, a member of the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs, told your favourite No. 1 newspaper, Khaleej Times, yesterday that if the workers refused to get back to work on Saturday, legal action will be taken against them. “The company has heard the problems of workers and has given them some concessions. But their demand is not acceptable. Workers have to abide by the contract they signed. What they are demanding is against the UAE labour law. The company has done everything it can to fulfil their demands,” he said.
“We intervened in the issue and asked the workers to get back to work. But they are sticking to their demand. Now we have to take strict action,” he added.
The Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs communicated the decision to workers yesterday after workers refused to accept the management’s concessions. Workers are demanding a minimum wage of Dh1,000 and an additional Dh300 for food.
The Besix management has decided to fufil several of the worker's demands including payment of food allowance, refunding money deducted as visa cost, air tickets for their destination, compensation in case of accidents and free gas in the kitchen.
The management also agreed to hike wages of those workers employed for more than five years.
“We will not stop our strike unless our demands are met by the company. We are not willing to accept anything less than what we have demanded. Otherwise we are ready to return home,” said one worker.
The company employs about 8,500 workers in different parts of UAE. The company is involved in several prestigious projects in Dubai including construction of the Burj Dubai Tower and the expansion of Garhoud Bridge. Due to the strike the construction work on these projects has been interrupted.
