IF SOMEONE had told you that a few office boys and some cleaners who who tidied up the school everyday had joined hands and supervised your child’s final exams, you’d most probably dismiss it with the contempt it deserves.

But, believe it or not, that’s precisely what took place at the Al Rashidiya Adult Centre when teachers who were supposed to have reportred for exam duty decided to play hookey! Fortunately not all of them did and the few who did turn up supervised the proceedings with a little help from the office boys and cleaners.

The Dubai educational Zone of course could believe what had happened and shot off a stern warning asking the Cntre to stop the practice! Which only means this sorry state of affairs at the Centre has been going on for wuite some time. But what is even more surprising is that the DEZ asked that the practice be stopped instead instead of punishing the Centre — and the teachers — for their brazen act of defiance and the termityto allow students to write their exams almost unsupervised.

No punishment can ever be severe enough short of strong disciplinary action, including perhaps the loss of pay for the period of the exams. As for the teachers who decided to stay at home, shame on them for treating this noble profession — and their students — with such scant respect. Hopefully the guilt will stay with them for a long time and will act as a constant reminder that education is not something one plays around with especially when the future of so many of their students depend on it.
