Bangaldesh expats raise funds for flood-hit

ABU DHABI — The Bangladeshi community got together at their embassy in the capital to mobilise funds for the flood-affected people in Bangladesh.

At the meeting on Sunday, a number of individuals and associations announced their contributions to the fundraising initiative.

A large section of Bangladeshi expatriates representing socio-cultural organisations, businessmen, small entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers and other professionals attended the meeting and expressed their solidarity and sympathy for the flood victims in Bangladesh.

The community not only responded favourably to the appeal of Ambassador Nazimullah Chowdhury but also promised to mobilise funds from Bangladesh expatriates for the ‘Chief Advisor’s Relief and Welfare Fund’, which has accounts branches of the Janata Bank in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Al Ain.

The account numbers to which people can make their donations at various branches of Janata Bank are Abu Dhabi, CD a/c no.2944, Dubai CD a/c no.4306, Sharjah CD a/c no. 3889, and Al Ain CD a/c no. 1388.

In a remarkable gesture, a student Muntaser who is pursuing his Master’s in computer and electrical engineering in the United States, donated a cheque of Dh1,500 in aid of flood victims. While accepting the contributions, Chowdhury said that he would welcome contributions not only from the members of the community but also from their friends and well-wishers who are living in the UAE.

He also explained the need for water purification tablets and water purification machines.

Meanwhile a number of countries, inlcuding Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Nordic countries and Turkey have already announced their contributions. The largest contribution of $50m came from Saudi Arabia, the ambassador added.
