Dr Abdul Malik Abdullah, head of the Paediatric Department at the hospital, said since thalassaemia was a genetic disease, medical check-up before marriage is very important.

The Etiqan Primary and Secondary School in Fujairah organised a campaign recently to raise awareness of the importance of premarital medical examination.

The Under-Secretary of the School Department, Fujairah Educational Zone, Juawher Obeid said, students will distribute booklets and hold discussions with residents about the disease.
