Chinese author Jung Chang spoke to students and parents of Jumeirah College about her experiences while writing her bestselling novel, Wild Swan, and the biography of Mao Zedong, Mao: the Unknown Story.

Paul Bloomfield, English teacher at Jumeirah College, said, “She spoke mainly of her experiences while writing her first book, Wild Swan. She spoke on the hardships she and her family went through in China.

“The students were deeply inspired by her stories and they would improve their reading habits further.”

Year six students Fatima Syed and Jared Aylward agreed.

“It was amazing, she is a legend. A really inspiring lady. The fact that she came and spoke of her hardships is really commendable,” said Fatima.

“I’ve not yet read her books, but her talk was so inspirational that I would go and read them,” said Jared.

Anne Kirkaldy, British mother of a girl student, Alice, said, “She was very inspiring and made me feel like I’ve wasted all my years.”

Susan Bieleski, mother of year eight student Andrew, said, “It was excellent and was very informative. Right from her short account of her life, the kids were able to relate to her because she explained what she went through when she was a 14-year-old. Many of her stories were traumatic.

“She also spoke of the sunny side of her life as a child in China.”

Jeremy Strong, author of popular children’s books, gave an hour-long presentation to students at Dubai British School.

“The kids loved him. They were glued to his face throughout the talk and his biggest fans were young male readers,” said Robert George, librarian of the school.
