The glossary, published on FANR website, defines terms used in FANR Regulations, Regulatory Guides and other documents.

It is aimed at assisting not only FANR staff and experts in the UAE dealing with these topics, but also all the external stakeholders, including the public, to understand the specific vocabulary used by the country’s independent nuclear regulator. “Communication in nuclear issues is almost as important as the technology itself,” said FANR Director-General Dr William D. Travers. “Such a glossary will help everyone involved in the nuclear field speak the same language and improve communication,” he added. “Safety, security and safeguards are easily confused. I hope this document will be useful to clarify the differences and the connections between them.”

In preparing the glossary, the FANR has taken resources from international documents such as those of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and others as a basis but adapted them to the way they were used and defined in the FANR’s own documents.

The glossary is meant to be a “living” document and will be updated from time to time.

The Arabic version of the document is currently under preparation and will also be available on the FANR website when ready. —
