This was disclosed to the Khaleej Times by Mauna Ali Sultan El Swedi, Assistant of Director of Primary Health Care for Financial Affairs and Administration.

She said 9,140 patients booked at the other specialist clinics of Dohms since the start of electronic booking service.

El Swedi said the Dohms was doing its best to ensure international standards of medical care to the residents of Dubai.

She said the role of primary healthcare was based on evaluating and examining information from the community medicine programme which aimed at enabling new medical cadres enhance their abilities and efficiency to give quality service to customers of the department.

She said Dohms primary healthcare was available in 17 medical centres in Dubai, and that Dubai was divided into four supervisory areas. Each area had five medical centres.

El Swedi said that primary healthcare presents medical consultative services through a very highly qualified medical crew specialised in community medicine. This was in addition to other services including children's health, from the stage before prenatal to antenatal, till the child was five years old.

She said the primary health care department had now extended its services to schools, for catering to the health care of students, right from the primary stage till the end of the secondary stage.

Meanwhile, the department has launched a clinic for travellers to provide them with vaccine necessary before travelling to foreign countries. There are five clinics at Dubai Airport besides the Health Inspection Centres at the ports in Dubai.

The primary health care department also formed a medical team to make house-to-house visits to take care of the medical needs of the elderly.

El Swedi said the aim behind setting up specialist clinics in the medical centres was to ease pressure on hospitals. Specialist clinics for diabetes will be set up in all the health centres in Dubai and would benefit over 5,000 diabetics, both nationals and expats.

The primary health department was also studying the feasibility of a new programme for pregnant women in cooperation with Dubai and Al Wasl hospitals besides the medical centres.
