The accused who was in a drunken condition allegedly tried to catch hold of the 13-year-old girl as she was entering a supermarket in Al Nakheel area last Sunday evening. She reported the man to her father who was accompanying her. Eyewitnesses said that the enraged father yelled at the man and beat him up. He was joined by shopkeepers as well as passers-by. However, the man escaped with minor injuries.
On being alerted, a team from RAK Police department arrested the man and took him to the Al Mammourah Police Station. Investigations are in progress.
The emirate has witnessed a number of similar cases in the last few months. The first one took place in one of the leading shopping malls when a UAE national molested another national. It is said that the man was following a group of women for a considerable time inside the mall. Suddenly, he pinched one of them. The court sentenced the offender to one-month suspended imprisonment and slapped him with a fine of Dh3,000 for attacking the woman. In another case, an Egyptian man was arrested on the charge of assaulting a woman in a public place. The accused, however, committed suicide by cutting his wrist while he was under custody in Al Mammourah jail.
