Anti-tobacco law violations: List of fines you will have to pay

Violators of the UAE’s anti-tobacco law will be fined from today as the executive regulations of the law come into effect.

1. Dh500 fine for smoking in cars in the presence of children under 12

2. Dh500 for smoking shisha in public places, parks or beaches

3. Fines between Dh100,000 to Dh1m on those who violate the ban on advertising

Apart from the fines, here are some other rules and regulations that need to be followed:

4. Blanket ban on smoking in public places and public transport

5. Stricter restrictions on smoking in enclosed places

6. Special permit needed for groceries and shisha cafes to sell tobacco products

7. Ban on sale of tobacco products to those under 18 years

8. Ban on shisha cafes in residential areas

9. Shisha cafes should be at least 150 metres away from places of worship, educational institutions

10. Ban on direct and indirect promotion and advertising of tobacco products

11. Up to two years jail term for importing tobacco without proper warnings

12. No display of tobacco products near the cashier, and items marketed for children

13. Smoking will not be allowed in any restaurant built in less than 1,000 square feet

14. Pictorial and written warnings mandatory on cigarette packaging
