Anti-counterfeiting exhibition attracts 10k visitors

ABU DHABI - The second edition of the Anti-counterfeiting Exhibition which was concluded today in Abu Dhabi has attracted more than 10000 visitors over 7 days, said Abu Dhabi’s Department of Economic Development (DED), organizer of the event.

93% of respondents to a recent poll expressed confidence in the measures taken by the government to curb counterfeiting.

CEO of Commercial Affairs at DED Salim Al-Nuaimi stated that the Department makes concerted efforts to fight the illegal commercial practices including piracy and fake products and seeks to toughen punitive action against violating companies and individuals.

The government of Abu Dhabi is co-coordinating efforts of all stakeholders including the Ministry of Economy to further strengthen intellectual property protection nation-wide.

The exhibition was inaugurated last Sunday (Dec. 13th) at Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi, by Undersecretary of DED Mohammed Omar Abdullah under the auspices of HE Nasser Al-Suwaidi, Chairman of the DED. Participants included the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Economy, Arab Anti-piracy Union as well as 20 companies from the UAE private sector.

Around 500 counterfeited consumer goods, or Knock Offs, such as bags, shoes, cosmetics, auto spare parts, watches, compact discs, sportswear, mobile phone, electric devices and others, were put on display at the exhibition along with the original goods.

The event is part of the year-round awareness campaign launched by the Department of Economic Development, according to the Executive Director of DD’s Commercial Affairs Hamad Salim Al-Kheribani Al-Nuaimi.

Nearly 11,400 counterfeit products carrying reputed global trade marks were detected in various segments of markets in Abu Dhabi, in 2009, according to Undersecretary of Abu DED, Mohammed Omar Abdullah, and these included about 402 foodstuff items, 2788 cosmetics (body and hair care), 5093 electric and electronic appliances, phones and auto spare parts, 3054 garments, shoes and accessories,” ,
