Hyderabad: Billed as the first such initiative in the country, Andhra Pradesh will soon have 100 per cent e-POS (point of sale) enabled mechanism in the state's Public Distribution System (PDS).
The e-POS is the point at which a customer makes a payment to the merchant in exchange for goods or service. At the point of sale, the receipt is dispensed electronically.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed the officials of the civil supplies department to install IRIS-recognition equipment, bio-metric and finger print-enabled e-POS machines across the state by next month.
At present, as many as 7,595 e-POS devices-cum-electronic Weighing Machines have been installed at Fair Price Shops (FPS) in the state. Due to this, the government has been able to save over Rs 880 million between May and July this year. "If the entire state is e-POS enabled, we can save up to Rs 10 billion per year," the Chief Minister said at a review meeting with the officials.
