The Awards (ADA) is aimed at long-term cooperation to raise public awareness on child and youth rights issues.

A conference this week involving signing of agreements between partners, including Unicef and Twofour54 by Anasy Media production, announced the awards details.

It has also been expanded to the regional and international arena and will provide youth opportunities for participation in documentary filmmaking.

A topic on child rights has been added as a category in the documentary section and a new category is dedicated to youth, encouraging them to produce a one-minute documentary.

“Children’s right to participation is fundamental to the convention on the rights of the child. It is an important measure of a country’s commitment and success,” said Sigrid Kaag, Unicef Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. “Media and new social networks play a significant role in enabling access and giving a voice to children.”

She said a Unicef team would soon visit the UAE to finetune and work on the details of the agreements.

Dhekra Ouali, ADA director, said a number of new activities and categories have been added to the awards to make documentaries popular.

The value of awards will remain the same as the previous session —Dh1.05 million. A sum of Dh500,000 will be given to the winner of the first award. Half of this sum will be given in cash and the other half in the form of production support in cooperation with Twofour54.

The screening night festival, namely Prix Jeunesse International and UNAFF TFF Festival, is among the parallel activities. The festival will be hosted for the first time in the Arab world at a special night.

In the Prix Jeunesse International Festival, the best documentary films about children will be screened for the new additional category “Child in our eyes”.
