Effective from March 1, the order applies to transport vehicles such as rented cars, luxury vehicles as well as privately operated buses. It was pointed out in the order that SPTC is the sole authority to issue licenses in this regard. SPTC officials have urged all concerned to apply for temporary licenses to avoid complications. Fines and penalties have also been doubled for the use of private vehicles as taxis. If caught for the first time, the fine amounts to Dh 5,000 and Dh 10,000 for a repeat offence, according to the order. The SPTC will take strict action against third-time offenders.

The steps have been taken to reduce illegal transportation of passengers, says the order. In an earlier interview, a SPTC representative had said, “We conduct regular checks and if someone is found indulging in the practice, we fine him. If the offence is repeated, the vehicle is confiscated for a short period and black points added to the licence-holder’s account.” Earlier this month, Khaleej Times had reported that unlicensed taxis were again gaining popularity in the emirate since SPTC introduced a starting fare of Dh20 for taxis operating from Sharjah to any other emirate.

SPTC had also banned private school buses from other emirates to operate in Sharjah on the first day of the new academic year 2008-2009 causing widespread chaos. The rule was later relaxed allowing the private bus companies to take up temporary licenses from SPTC.
