The Ladies' International Circle is one of the Garden City's most prominent associations. Having been in existence for 27 years, the aim is to bring together ladies of all nationalities for cultural and educational interaction. Usually around 50 nations are represented and each year a total membership of 250 is anticipated.

Monthly general meetings are held at one of the city's premier hotels. Yearly highlights include the annual fashion show, international evening and winter bazaar.

Today's meeting will be a registration night. Membership fee is Dh80. Non-members are also welcome for the dinner, which is Dh35 for members and Dh45 for non-members. Doors open at 7pm, and last year's members are requested to bring their cards to facilitate administrative procedures. Lancome will be represented.

The LIC committee works diligently to provide a varied programme of activities, which are interesting, affordable and devoid of social exclusivity.

October events include the twice-monthly coffee mornings. On October 6, is Ya Leil Ya Ain Arabic breakfast. Dr Taif Al Sarraj will discourse on "diabetes". On October 13, the coffee morning will be in Luce's. This will include a cooking demonstration and it is hoped a cook book will be compiled of all recipes from coffee mornings. In addition, members are requested to bring a copy of their favourite recipe for inclusion.

On October 20, a bus tour of Al Ain including continental breakfast at the Mercure Hotel Jebel Hafit, leaves the Inter-Con at 8.30am sharp. Cost is Dh20, but book in advance.

Prospective members will also be attracted by the many discounts that have been negotiated with shops and companies in the Garden City. There is also a library located on the first floor of the Hilton Hotel.

Double delight

Last Thursday, Anthony P Liddiard, Director of Operations, Inter-Continental Hotels Group UAE, was in the capital of the Eastern Region to preside over a reception for over 300 guests and VIP residents in the community.

The occasion was to jointly mark the official opening of a new restaurant and also to welcome the new general manager who has taken over the helm from Mr Antoine Berberi. The evening was graced by the presence of Mohammed Salem Al Daheri, Under-Secretary of the Private Department of the President, Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the Director General of the hotel's owning company, Abdullah Al Romaithi, National Corporation for Tourism and Hotels.

"Arabesque" is a completely revamped outlet, occupying the former "CafŽ Med" and for even older residents the former "Rotisserie". The design is open and airy with easy access to the Nawafeer Terrace, and the cuisine will feature a fusion of Western and Arabic styles. There will also be theme nights including best of British Mexican and Arabic.

Sean Morris arrives in his first GM position but is no stranger to the UAE having spent almost four years as resident manager at the Inter-Continental, Abu Dhabi. Former positions include resident manager Semiramis InterCon and at the Atheneum InterCon in Athens. He is accompanied in Al Ain by his wife, Sarah, and their three daughters.

Choral Society

Saturday, September 20, saw the first full rehearsal of the Al Ain Choral Society at the Inter-Continental Resort Hotel, under the direction of Martha Griffin. If any budding songbirds are interested in joining up, it certainly isn't too late and details can be obtained from Choral Society President, Sylvia Holmes, on mobile 6634650.

The wholly amateur AACS has been running since 1992 and over the years residents in the Garden City have been entertained by concerts, e.g. "Basically Broadway", "Animal Fair", and Musicals. Of the latter the Gilbert and Sullivan pieces Trial by Jury and Mikado were performed as well as the popular Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Traditional highlights include festive season performances and this year the Al Ain Choral Society's Xmas dinner and concert is scheduled for December 14 at the InterCon. Directrix Martha Griffin has been wielding the baton for two years in the capital of the Eastern Region. Hailing from Canada, Martha is a qualified teacher of French and drama as well as music. A talented amateur performer herself, she has in addition, associated administrative experience having served on the board of directors of the Orangeville Theatre in Ontario.

Mrs Griffin also directs the Al Ain Youth Chorus. This 20-strong ensemble performed on the Chaine Dinner circuit in the Garden City as well as at the Hilton Xmas Tree lighting and at the AACS Xmas Concert. Upcoming gigs for them are the St Andrew's Night celebration in November and possible appearance at the Al Ain Flower Festival.
