The contract was signed at the AUST campus in Nuaimiah after a seminar titled "Computing Skills Examinations Standards", which highlighted various tenets of the Unesco-designed IT course and was attended by a large number of faculty members from AUST.
The ICDL programme was first introduced in 1988 in Finland where it was implemented with a certain degree of success. Subsequently, the European ICDL Foundation was established to implement the programme in various countries.
Since 1999, ICDL courses have been conducted worldwide and recognised as a certificate accreditated in over 50 countries including six from the Arab world. In August 2000, the Unesco office in Cairo was authorised to run the programme in the Arab countries.
With the signing of the agreement with AUST, the ICDL programme will now be made available to the people of the UAE.
Those with an ICDL certification can look forward to upgrading their IT skills in accordance with the needs of the job market.
Speaking at the seminar, Dr Salman said that AUST's recognition conformed to the educational philosophy and global vision of the AUST network.
